In the style of ancient Greek / Roman epic poets, he laced his writing with literary references such that you need to know a lot about history and literature to really catch everything. Or, like me, you have to just get comfortable not catching everything and just assuming he knows what he's talking about.
ChatGPT did a better job, but was confusing with the many, many references. Maybe that is how Paradise Lost is, but I've never read it.
